Do you know what a “silo mindset” is and how to deal with it?

Imagine an invisible wall between individuals or departments that hinders collaboration and efficiency. Within their own silo, each person focuses on their task in isolation, disconnected from the bigger picture.

  • How do silos form, and what do they cost us?
  • How can we recognize when it’s happening, and more importantly, how do we break free?

We took a close look at these questions in our hands-on Collaboration Mindset workshop—and it was anything but dry theory.

We tackled a challenge that simulated three different departments working on a shared project. And since we were at Bobcat EMEA, guess what we built? That’s right—a digger! 🚜

💡 What Did We Discover?
The silo mindset is sneaky—it forms incredibly fast, especially under pressure:
👀 We focus only on our own tasks, as if nothing else exists
🌋 Emotions take over, leading to chaos
🔍 We overlook available resources
🙉 We don’t hear what others are saying
💭 We create false assumptions about other teams
😓 Work becomes frustrating, even when we’re giving it our all

🚀 How Do We Break Free?
The first key is surprisingly simple: slow down, reassess, reorganize. Ironically, slowing down helps us move forward faster.

But there’s much more to it. We explored a range of strategies to break the silo mindset and build a collaborative culture—both at the individual and organizational levels.

And while we didn’t manage to finish our prototype 🚜 within the time limit, we gave it our best effort—and that was something worth celebrating. 🥂

🤔 What About You?
Do you recognize any of these symptoms in your company? What are you doing about them?

What if we don't have to choose?
