What’s so complicated about communication?
People often think it’s mostly about speaking well, arguing cleverly, and getting your own way. But in reality, it’s much more interesting.
Communication is like a partner dance 💃🏻— it’s rhythm, energy, harmony. It’s the art of being aware of yourself and your partner, sensing when to slow down and when to speed up. It’s about moving through the space with respect, openness, and confidence. Sometimes you lead, sometimes you let yourself be led. And what if you step on your partner’s foot? That can happen too. It’s human. Just apologize, and you can keep dancing.😉
This definition was created by the participants in my last Effective Communication course, and I wholeheartedly agree with it. All it took was looking at communication differently — not just through techniques, rules, and tools.
We spent a day together filled with practice and deep “aha” moments. Together, we explored questions like:
How can you succeed under pressure? How do you set healthy boundaries? How do you structure difficult conversations, and why is it better to describe facts instead of focusing on emotions, blame, or lecturing? When should you give advice, and when should you ask questions or take a coaching approach?
💡Two mini tips from the course for you:
✅When you need to set a boundary, talk about yourself, not the other person:
“I need some space right now to finish this,” instead of “You’re always interrupting me.”
✅When you want to slow things down and avoid falling into the pressure trap, use a “rescue phrase” like:
“You caught me by surprise. Can you give me a minute to process this?” — it creates space.
And what value do the participants themselves see?
✨ Less stress and better results
✨ Better relationships at work and at home
✨ Being a better version of themselves
For me personally, this course was special for another reason: the entire day was held in English🌍, with participants from different cultures. I’m always fascinated and filled with hope by how much we have in common, despite all our differences.
A big thank you to Tomas Bimka and Hewlett Packard Enterprise for the excellent organization.
Wishing you a beautiful spring and may you keep dancing gracefully.💃🏻
Take care!
